How Indian Businesses Are Adapting Digital Marketing for AI Search Visibility

How Indian Businesses Are Adapting Digital Marketing for AI Search Visibility

Indian companies have now moved from being rank-driven to presence-driven SEO. There are four adaptations driving the change: restructuring their content for an AI to extract an entire answer, making brand information uniform on all surfaces a machine can see, measuring AI impressions alongside click-throughs, and aligning fragmented channel budgeting into one program as the AI answer is stitched from sources that are not owned by any individual channel.

Search Abandoned Rank Reporting in Favor of Appearance Reporting

On June 3, 2026, Google announced a new Generative AI performance report in Search Console. This report tracks the frequency of your URLs in AI Overviews and AI Mode reports, by page, country, device, and date. No click data is available. Neither is any data on click-through rate, average position, or trigger queries. It is now official from Google that the report is indeed a dedicated view of the data that is already present in your aggregate performance metrics, so your aggregated numbers remain the same. The only thing that is different is the fact that you are now able to see the AI slice separately. (Source: Google Search Central, June 2026.)

This is the entire point. For more than two decades now, a marketing team in India had only to access a rank tracker to get their exact ranking status. This new report addresses a far narrower question: Whether you even made it in the room, and it politely declines to address the second question that everyone’s finance director will ask. Microsoft has suggested similar reporting for Bing, and clicks are tracked via the AI Assistant channel in GA4. Measurement has now been split in two parts, and most marketing teams in India are now reporting from just one part of the stack.

It is not the companies who bought the AEO pack that are embracing it so quickly. It is those who saw something that made them feel uncomfortable. A site may rank very well but may not be the perfect source for synthesis. The ranking process looks at how relevant a page is to the query being asked. The synthesis process looks at whether a machine can extract a pure, self-standing, and attributable sentence from your page and be able to support it. These are two separate issues, and overcoming the first has never meant resolving the second.

The choice of a digital marketing agency that provides 360-degree services in India is far more significant today than it was five years ago for several reasons.

Three Layers That Will Tell If an AI Engine Will Refer to You

Our criteria for measuring the visibility of AI include three layers, and order matters since the problems that exist at the lower layer cannot be solved by efforts at the higher level.

The first layer is entity. It is concerned with whether the machine can identify who you are, precisely and consistently. Problems in this layer mean that the AI will refer to you ambiguously, get your company’s date wrong, or confuse you for some other firm with a similar name in another city. Very few fixes related to this problem reside with your SEO department. They lie with brand, public relations, reputation management, and listing departments.

The second layer is the evidence layer. This layer concerns whether any of the information present on the web can verify what you claim to be. Problems in this layer mean that you are known but never recommended. The models will mention you in a list without ever referring to you. The fixes are case studies, third-party coverage, reviews, original research and results.

The third level is called extractability. This level determines if the machine can pull out a clean and isolated answer from your page. If this level fails, you are ranked on Google but never appear in the AI answer above your listing. This is the stage at which schema markup and questions and answers style headings are applied.

Nearly all of the websites from India are optimized mainly at the third stage and only slightly at the first stage. It should have been otherwise. A very easy page to scrape gets citations from everybody except for you.

Changes Made by Indian Marketing Teams

The first change is in reporting. The ranking reports are complemented with appearance and citation reports because the discussion of AI visibility cannot be based on an older metric.

The second change relates to planning of pages. The keyword-based pages are shifting to Q&A-style pages where the subheadings are the actual questions asked by the buyers and the first sixty words underneath them are answering this question.

The third one is the hardest to justify internally. More content will no longer help because volume without information gain will provide a model with nothing that it can’t build somewhere else. References are made to people publishing content that is not already part of the response, i.e., your content, your benchmarks, and your methods.

The fourth one is authorship. Authorless expert content doesn’t have much value nowadays. Named authors, with their credentials, biography, and Person schema, are now retrofitted to article collections that used to be unsigned for years.

The fifth one is governance, and it’s the one that will determine whether the first four are going to live or die. An established set of company facts, used across your website, social profiles, listings, and press releases, is the thing that will stop a model from hedging when asked about your business.

Questions to Ask Before You Purchase “AEO” Services

Ask any agency three questions. What of the three layers do you work on? Show me your AI-visibility measurement and not just your rank report. Who reconciles our brand information across the channels that you have not been hired for?

These questions will differentiate agencies right away. The majority of them will show you their schema markup as their answer engine optimisation service. Schema is a third-layer hygiene practice. It is important but definitely not enough.

TechShu, a methodology-led B2B digital marketing agency, founded in 2009, having its headquarters in Kolkata, India, and offices in Mumbai, Chennai, and Hyderabad, as well as the UK, UAE, USA, and Singapore. TechShu became a Google Premier Partner in 2016, and it is a member of INT. Global. Our DMFlow methodology starts from analysis and positioning, which is the first layer, before a single webpage gets created. This is the reason why our AEO projects begin with entity consistency and not markup.

FAQs

What is AI Search Visibility?

AI search visibility is how often and how accurate your business appears in AI answers to questions with buying intent. This metric uses appearance and citation, but not keyword placement, because AI generates answers which do not show a list of ranked links.

How can I optimize my AI Search Visibility in AEO?

Follow the right order. Make sure all machine-readable data about your company is consistent, prove your claims with independent sources, and after that restructure pages to allow for extraction of a full answer by a model. Mark-up and headings can be helpful, but will not help a model to get a consistent entity.

AEO and SEO: What is the Difference?

Yes, although it relies on SEO. SEO makes the page discoverable and rankable. AI Overviews make the page citable and structured in such way that a model can generate an answer and have a consistent image of your business online. AEO will not work without SEO, but vice versa is also true.

Can traffic in AI Overviews be tracked via Google Analytics?

Partial. The Generative AI report in Search Console displays the number of impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode but no clicks or click-through rates. Sessions referred by AI assistants are recorded by the AI Assistant channel in GA4. This combination provides visibility and traffic, but a clear cost-per-result for AI search still isn't there yet.

Are Indian businesses getting any traffic from AI search so far?

Volumes are modest relative to organic search, but intent is very high, because users ask the assistant shortlist and comparison queries when they are near the bottom of their purchase funnels. The risk isn't missing traffic now. It is being left off tomorrow's shortlist that an AI model prepares.

How long will it take to boost AI search visibility?

Entity corrections may appear in AI answers after four to eight weeks. Changes that make a page more extractable usually become visible in the Generative AI report in Search Console in one to two months. Evidence gathering through PR, review, and original research takes two to four quarters.
