There are following type of keywords (Short head means few keywords but with good search volumes and Long tail means many keywords each with low search volumes):
1. Unique Brand Keywords (priority #1): The Unique Brand Keywords ... All the keywords which significies your business, example for TechShu, it is TechShu, Tech Shu, TechShu.com etc , now techshu is unique enough to understand it and thus we are on top 30 results as TechShu ... we run a google alert for these keywords .. but there are other brand keywords as well like SEOforClients, SEO for Clients etc ...
now "SEO for Clients" is our brand keyword but it is not unique .. many people talk about SEO for Clients, they don't mean us ... so what we do is we try to see uniquely identifable keywords like "SEOforClients.com" (Double quotes are important) ... We add SEO for Clients +Kolkata etc to make it unique ... Now do we understand brand keywords. The competition may not be high (if you have some unique brand name)

2. Unique Product keywords (priority #2): The fancy names you have given to your products and services (The competition may not be high if you have given it a unique name. We have clients who have given their product name like “History time”, it is not unique and is subject to huge competition).

This may look like a brand keyword but we are keeping it seperate for some purpose esp for Google alerts and tracking ... Some of Clients have over 12 product keywords and with different combinations, it can cross 50 :)

3. Product Keywords, Brand name with some combinations to make it unique type of search (priority #3): Example, Sanjeeb Kumar is a brand name but is not unique, so we will come up with “Sanjeeb Kumar Techshu” etc to make it unique. Customer also does the same to search for the brands. All the brand keywords are important, all combinations are important, I can give you an example, where it made a lot of different, we have a client, there brand name is not very unique, XYZ technologies .. now they have a office in melbourne .. but they were not ranking for XYZ technologies melborne, some otheryellow pages were listing and ranking, we made them rank for this keyword and it made a lot of difference ... also you can see for hotel industry these brand keywords are a fight, portals like tripadvisor, expedia and all are fighting for ranking, sometimes you may miss out, don't miss out. List all, in different heads and track ... The conversion ration from these brand keywords are huge.

4. Public Company representatives (priority #5): All the public faces of the company with right combinations to get the best conversation around them. In fact rank for all the advisor of the company too. This can give a huge mileage. See the ideacts.com ranking for Alok Kejriwal’s search

5. Buying keywords Short Heads (priority #6): (If you search in Google and find 7 out of 10 websites and advertiser to offer the same services and information that your website offers. Also to be a head, it needs to have huge search volume. Huge is relative, as in a games industry 10,000 searches a month is not huge whereas in a web security industry, 2000 search a month is huge). Buying keywords means there is a huge chance that the person who is searching for this keyword is looking to buy your services/products ... example: for web marketing, if someone searches for web marketing company
kolkata ... we know they are looking for some web marketing company in kolkata and may be interested to talk to us ... may be buy a product, may be for a survey .. but they want to contact usand buy something from us ... these keywords are good for PPC, one can invest on it to get better returns ... web designing cost etc are some more examples :) ... Are we clear with buying .... marketing tip .. you can track buying keyword conversation on web to generate more leads ..

6. Buying keywords Long tail: (Again, relevant but may be towards informational/research searches, the search volume doesn’t matter much, it is to bring a lot of traffic using a lot of keywords + it helps in branding too)

7. Related Research keywords Short Head and Long tail: These are the keywords which people search to know some of the topics, we call it research topics, example: “Is cow milk good for baby’s health” is a research keyword for child education website.

8. Keywords that are attracting for the segment but not related to our services or products (Both Short head and long tail): Example, pregnancy and working mom section under the “early child education” website.

9. Unrelated keywords short head and long tail, sometimes it brings in a lot of traffic: Something like ranking for a new movie name under “early child education” website. You can’t find any direct relevancy but there is hardly any keyword which is 100% irrelevant.

10. New emerging keywords: This is an easy way to get more and more traffic from low competition but highly searched volume. Example when Google launched “Google wonder wheel” I wrote an article which ranked highly on search engines and it brought a lot of traffic to our website.

11. Unique Competitor Brand and product keywords: (priority #9) Some of the competitors name may get huge searches and having a page for them under your forum, UGC blog can bring in very relevant traffic.

12. Question keywords (Short head and long tail): (priority #15) This may be covered in the above points but still this is somewhat unique and needs to be achieved with a different strategy. Having a forum can make it happen with much ease. This is very useful for some of the sectors where the visitors are not very technical, they will search with the whole question, example: “How can I install a program on my mobile phone”, “How to wear a saree (It has really huge search volume in its industry)” etc.
