Facebook is Changing the Face of Content Discovery: Responsible for 24% of Mobile Referrals

Facebook plays a major role when it comes to content discovery on mobile devices. It is responsible for 24% of referrals to news and entertainment publishers, revealed Quantcast through its official blog. The finding is a part of Quantcast’s upcoming report on how mobile has changed the way users engage with content. The report is based on the study on referral sources for the top 250 publishers using Quantcast Measure over the last one year.

The key findings of the upcoming report are:

  • Facebook is responsible for 24% of mobile referrals to top news and entertainment publishers. In fact, Facebook generates more mobile referrals than all other social media platforms combined.
  • Social media is the largest mobile referral source for news and entertainment industry.

Quantcast’s analysis  For a recent re/code article, we found that in-app browsing is responsible for 24% of iOS pageviews. The Facebook app was responsible for half of that figure, or 12% of all iOS browsing. That’s three times the pageviews of the next-largest browser, Chrome for iOS…Recent efforts from Facebook, including Paper and FB Newswire, demonstrate Facebook’s commitment to maintaining that lead. When Google Reader was shut down last year, many users were left wondering where they would turn for their daily news fix. Google may have hoped it would be Google Plus. Unfortunately for Google, the answer appears to be Facebook.”
